Here’s the true story with personal data scrubbed:

A Maltese college professor contacts a staff member of a man who is campaigning for election to a high-level position in the government in America’s Executive Branch.

The professor claims to have a  huge cache of classified emails from a female former high official in the State Department which had fallen into his hands via her extremely careless security practices.

The former State Dept. official (who lost the emails) was currently busy campaigning for election to the same high-level position in the Executive Branch as the man whose staff member was approached by the professor.

The woman who lost the emails also lost the election. The man whose staff member was approached by the professor won the election.

The political party of the woman who lost the emails and the election sued the man who won the election, his staff member, and the professor, for wrongly attempting to steal the election from the woman. They hope to get the election overturned so the woman can fill the highest-level position in the Executive Branch.

As the lawsuit proceeded it came time to call-in the professor to determine why he had contacted the staff member of the winner of the election, and to see the emails he claimed to have.

It now seems the mysterious Maltese man with the classified emails cannot be found. It seems he may be dead! No one seems to know where he is, or what happened to him. Hmm.
