Newspapers have always been allowed to express their political opinion by endorsing a bona fide candidate.

What is new is for a media outlet to become so zealous in support of their political narrative and doctrine as to participate in yellow journalism, smear tactics, and fake news (a euphemism for lying) to gain some advantage over their perceived opponents.

Here’s a current example in the form of a social media post made by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) endorsing a non-candidate!:
